Female Athlete of the Month: May 2015

Name:  Alaina Dennis

Age:  23 (but I'll be 24 next week!)

Hometown:  Warsaw, IL

Occupation:  Nurse

How long have you been a member at 1020?  2.5 months

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty.  I had followed Ten Twenty on Facebook for a while and finally go the guts to call about joining.  I was really nervous but excited when I walked in.  I had a feeling this was going to be a place I loved and was challenged by every time I came through the doors.

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining?  I feel a lot stronger and more healthy!  I am more mobile in certain lifts and my body seems to have more stamina in workouts.

What are your individual goals?  I'd love to fit into a size 8 again!  I have many goals for nutrition, in hopes that this and CrossFit 3-4 times a week will assist me to reach my size goal.  I can't wait for the day that I can RX a workout, but I know it will come in due time.  I want to improve my pull-ups and push-ups (strip those resistance bands away!) and work on kipping.

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  It's hard to pin a moment because I truly enjoy the community at 1020 every day and pushing each other in every WOD.  Getting Female Athlete of the Month is really exciting for me.  It's awesome that others think you are improving and moving upward in your fitness journey!

What do you enjoy most about the coaching staff at 1020?  They are really supportive, fun, friendly and don't let you cheat yourself.  I know that they push us to improve because they believe in us.  There's a quote at 1020 that goes something like "you don't stop when you feel like it, you stop when you're done."  And I think that's exactly what the staff expects of us here.  And they don't just say it, they are right beside you, helping you to the end. 

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started?  Just get started!  There's always a reason to wait but I promise it is worth it.

Tell us something we don't know about you?  I think I've told some of ya, but I'm going to Europe in July for 2 weeks!  I'm so excited and can't wait to find a box in one of my destinations to drop by!

Favorite WOD?  Something with a combo of squats and box jumps.

Least Favorite WOD?  OVERHEAD SQUATS.  Mobility, mobility, mobility.


Male Athlete of the Month: May 2015

Name:  Tyler Goodman

Age:  24

Hometown:  Bethalto, IL

Occupation:  Project Engineer for Contegra Construction

How long have you been a member at 1020?  5 months

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty.  I really had no idea what CrossFit even was so I was a little nervous of course.  Everyone's so motivated and easy going though, and I started having a blast right away.

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining?  I just plain feel better since joining.  It's given me more energy and motivation in all other aspects of life.  I've always had trouble sticking with a workout routine, so it can be difficult to see results and reach goals.  That's not been the case with 1020.  I feel like I have accomplishments every time I come in, whether it be just completing a WOD after a rough workday, or a huge PR, I seem to walk out knowing I'm better off than when I walked in.

What are your individual goals?  My goal is really just to keep showing up every day.  Everyone works so hard at 1020, it's almost impossible not to do the same.  So I feel that if I stick with it, any goals I may have will fall into place. 

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  Probably when I landed on my head trying to do handstand push-ups.  I'm sure it was other peoples favorite moment too!

What do you enjoy most about the coaching staff at 1020?  They seem to become friends with everyone that walks in the door and they have a genuine passion for trying to make everyone achieve their goals.  Good people all around!

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started?  Don't think twice, just come!  Working out and having fun at the same time?  Two birds with one stone. 

Tell us something we don't know about you?  I am obsessed with hunting.  That's about the only thing I'll miss a WOD for this fall.

Favorite WOD?  Murph was a blast, but I'm glad it's only once a year.

Least Favorite WOD?  Was 15.5 the one with all the thrusters?  Ya, that one.
