Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty: I have known Dana since our high school days and when she told me she did CrossFit in Edwardsville, I was excited to try it out.  I had been doing CrossFit the last semester of undergrad and figured I would continue it in dental school.  My first day, all I remember is trying to remember everyone's name.

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining? Being able to see an improvement both physically and mentally during the workouts.  I enjoy looking back on wodify and comparing my Olympic lifts and other workouts from when I began.

What are your individual goals? Someday get DUBS.

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  Signing up for the Open last year and seeing where I compared to everyone else who was competing.

What do you enjoy  most about the coaching staff at 1020? How supportive they are everyday, especially for us morning people.

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started? Take it slow, and give it time.  Change is not something you're going to see overnight but if you keep sticking with it, everything will get easier.

Tell us something we don't know about you?  I am a twin, not identical.

Favorite WOD?  Fight Gone Bad

Least Favorite WOD?   All of them right after I finish.

How long have you been a member at 1020?  8 Months

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty: On my first day, I was kind of nervous because I had never been to a CrossFit class.  It's funny because I had been really skeptical about what a CrossFit class would be like and what it could offer.  I thought that a workout only consisted of a 10-15 minute WOD and that was it.  I used to poke fun at Kyle Mason and say that he spent more time driving to workout than actually working out.  Needless to say I was super wrong, and I couldn't be happier about it.  I didn't realize that there was also a warm-up, a lifting-focused component, a workout, and then a cool-down...summing up to be at about an hour-long workout.  The reason my skepticism is so funny is because on my first day I walked in to find out that we were doing a Hero WOD that included a ton of lifting and about 2 miles of running.  The WOD alone took about 45 minutes.  Hahahaha.  It was an awesome workout and it kicked my ass.  I admit that I am happy that not every WOD is a Hero WOD though...

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining? I've seen so much improvement in my flexibility and overall form for the lifting movements.  Before, I really didn't have a lot of experience weightlifting, so I've come a long way!  I've definitely improved my overall strength and have gained a lot of confidence too!

What are your individual goals? I would like to be able to do a pull-up!  I'm working on it right now, but I'm not quite there yet.

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  I'm not sure if I have one specific moment...

What do you enjoy  most about the coaching staff at 1020? I love that everyone is really encouraging and not judgmental at all.  All the communication is positive, which makes for a really positive environment!  I also appreciate how eager the coahces are to help me when I'm struggling with a movement.

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started? Don't be intimidated by the workouts.  Everything can be scaled down and you can move at your own pace.  I did the majority of my beginning workouts with a PVC instead of a barbell and I always got a good workout in.

Tell us something we don't know about you?  I am fluent in sarcasm.  Also, I have an identical twin.

Favorite WOD?  Anything with DUBS.

Least Favorite WOD?   Anything with Burpees (also ALL the OPEN workouts)

Occupation:  Student

How long have you been a member at 1020?  5 Months

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty: I was super nervous, I remember walking in and seeing everyone laying on the ground after the workout, and thinking oh my gosh what did I get myself into.  After they all caught their breath, everyone came up and introduced themselves to me, and told me how excited they were I joined.

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining? Since joining 1020, I have been able to actually see muscles.  Like I never thought I would be able to see the muscles in my arm.  I have also been able to accomplish double unders, and do a 105 clean and jerk.  I also got the benefit of getting to workout with some of the most amazing and genuine people who now I can say are more than my friends, they are family.

What are your individual goals? I want to be able to do a handstand push-up, toes to bar, and just want to keep pushing myself to become a better athlete.

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  There are so many to count, but the one I would have to pick would be the moment I got double unders.  I worked on them everyday for tow weeks after working out, and the day I finally got 26 in a row was an amazing day.  I felt all my hard work was finally proving to pay off.

What do you enjoy  most about the coaching staff at 1020? The coaching staff at 1020 are the most genuine and caring people I have ever met.  They all care so much about helping you get to your personal best.  They don't give up on you ever.  They sometimes have more faith in me than I have had in myself.  They are always there to answer questions when needed, show you an example if you're confused and to push you to your personal best.

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started? Don't be scared or nervous that people are going to judge you if you can't do the workout RX, or you struggle with certain things, it's okay.  CrossFit Ten Twenty is a no judgment zone; everyone there is there to cheer you on.  Also, it's okay to ask for help, that is why the coaches are there.  They won't look at you crazy if you need help.  They like helping you and watching you improve.  It is such an amazing rush when you're in the middle of your workout and you hear people screaming at you to keep it up, and how great you're doing.  CrossFit will change your life; it for sure has changed mine.

Tell us something we don't know about you? I am a part of a group called IRUN4.  Everyone always has that person that says, oh go workout for me, or an extra mile for me.  It's a group for the people who can't go workout or run because of a physical or development reason.  It's a group that you can run, do CrossFit or just do a workout for.  You get a buddy that you can post to about every time you workout to make them feel great.  I have a little buddy whose name is Bennett and he has Down Syndrome, so every time I workout, I post to him to show him he is my inspiration to keep going.

Favorite WOD?   Anything with Thrusters.

Least Favorite WOD?  Anything with Burpees.

Female Athlete of the Month: January 2016

Name:  Karla DesAngles

Age:  44

Hometown:  Worden, IL

Occupation:  Administrative Support - Contegra Construction

How long have you been a member at 1020?  I have been with Ten Twenty since January 2015.

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty:  I was very nervous my first day at Ten Twenty because I was also new to Contegra.  I didn't know anyone and was apprehensive about being able to handle the workouts.  Everyone was very nice and made me feel welcome.

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining? I had been working out in a regular gym for over a year when I started Ten Twenty.  I had seen progress in my endurance but I had not seen any progress in muscle definition.  Within 3 months of starting CrossFit, I could see definite muscle definition and increased strength.  I continue to see more muscle definition and gain more strength each week.  I've amazed myself with what I have been able to do; amount of weight lifted and WOD's completed.

What are your individual goals? My goals for 2016 are to attend a minimum of four classes a week in hopes of mastering double-unders, pull-ups and hand-stand push-ups.  And to increase my CrossFit Total to 500lbs.

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  My favorite moment at Ten Twenty so far actually happened recently.  I completed The CrossFit Total for the second time and was able to back squat 185 lbs and dead-lift 215 lbs, both personal records for me.  I increased both lifts by 80 lbs each.  I never imagined at 44 years old I would be able to handle that much weight.  I'm proud of that accomplishment.

What do you enjoy  most about the coaching staff at 1020? The coaching staff at Ten Twenty is amazing!  Everyone has such great personalities and they use their personalities to motivate and encourage the athletes.  I personally have pushed myself harder just because a coach was standing there believing I could do it!  They also make me feel like I'm part of a family.  Everyone, include the other athletes, are always very encouraging and supportive.  It's a great feeling.

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started? My advice to anyone interested in starting CrossFit is to jump in and do it!  You will never know what you're capable of doing until you try it.  I never dreamed I would be doing what I'm doing now but I am and it feels amazing; both physically and mentally!

Tell us something we don't know about you?  Something you don't know about me is I've played organized softball since I was seven years old.  So I've played for almost 40 years, almost.  There was only a few years that I missed playing at all so it's been almost every year since I was seven.

Favorite WOD?  I don't remember the names but I really like any WOD that challenges me.  Makes me feel like I've worked every muscle in my body by the time I'm done.

Least Favorite WOD?  I don't remember the name of it but all I remember is it had a lot of rowing in it.  I can vividly remember that WOD was the only time I have come close to vomiting during a WOD.  I don't even remember what the other elements of the WOD were but I know we had to row a lot and on top of the other elements it felt like I was going to die.  I finished it, without throwing up, but I sure didn't think I would!

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty:  I was trying to convince my roommate to get into CrossFit so we came in on a Saturday.  I hadn't trained in 2 months.  I almost lost my lunch that day, but I remember the coaching being awesome and meeting everyone there.  It was great!

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining? I'm lifting more in all my lifts since joining, and I just feel healthier.

What are your individual goals? 200#'s in the core lifts, a muscle up and handstand walks.

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  The Thanksgiving party, it was a blast!  And getting Double Unders.

What do you enjoy  most about the coaching staff at 1020? How outgoing all the coaches are, and their collective ability to get me to understand my form and technique.

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started? Take the plunge.  It's challenging and anyone can do it, you just have to have a good attitude.

Tell us something we don't know about you?  I'm a giant nerd.  I love comic books, the Flash is my favorite.  I also have a compulsion to back into parking spaces.

Favorite WOD?  Anything with Clean Lifts.

Least Favorite WOD? Anything with thrusters and wall balls.

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty:  I didn't really have time to think about much because Coach Catlin pushed me through the door and forced me into a workout.  Luckily he did it though because CrossFit is a big part of my life now.

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining?  I have seen changes in my attitude, my body and I have learned to lift heavy shit :) I have also made some real great friends in the process.

What are your individual goals?  I want to be able to do multiple strict pull-ups, get a 200# Split Jerk and continue to get stronger and healthier.

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  Oh man, this is tough.  I have had so many great times at Ten Twenty.  Some of my favorite moments are when I competed in my first individual competition, getting 175# Split Jerk and all the times my Ten Twenty Fam and I have had rad dance parties.

What do you enjoy  most about the coaching staff at 1020? The Coaching Staff at Ten Twenty is great!  They are always working on helping you reach your goals.

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started?  Don't think about it, just do it.  You deserve it!

Tell us something we don't know about you?  It may seem hard to believe but I was a cheerleader in High School.

Favorite WOD?  Annie or Grace

Least Favorite WOD?  Even though my nickname is Fran, I would have to say Fran may be be favorite WOD.  I also despise any WOD that has ALL the Burpees.

Male Athlete of the Month: November 2015

Name: Jon Christensen

Occupation: I am a 3rd year Osteopathic Medical Student

How long have you been a member at Ten Twenty?  Six Months

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty.  When I walked through the doors, I immediately got "Licked-to-Death" by Blue and I immediately knew 1020 was going to be a good fit for me.  And then Coach Dana made me run around the building for a "warm-up" which turned out to be a pretty good workout in itself.

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining?   For some reason the ass in my pants shrunk, while the waist band became larger???

What are your individual goals?  Emma Stone.

Favorite moment at Ten Twenty so far?  The 2-Year Anniversary party. Hardcore athletes know how to party! I am surprised I did not have to stick an IV in anyone.

What do you enjoy most about the coaching staff at Ten Twenty?  They have an amazing ability to motivate me to bust my ass and get that PR, even when I have worked 12 days straight with 4 hours sleep and my attending tell me that I am the most incompetent, worthless, lazy student they have ever seen.  The 1020 coaches repeatedly remind me that I may not be the smartest, strongest, or fastest athlete, but lazy will never be an accurate adjective used to describe me.

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started?  Invest in a Grip 'n Grab. The textured tips are really beneficial to help pick up dropped objects from the floor.

Tell us something we don’t know about you?   I actually suffer from Raynaud's Phenomenon. This is why I always wear pants and a sweatshirt, yes, even in the summer time.

Favorite WOD? Usually any long chipper WOD.

Least Favorite WOD? AMRAPs. I get bored.  Oh, and thrusters. Or possibly "Coach Taylor's Ab Warm-Ups"  which usually leaves me in the fetal position.

I am really getting tired of Rich Froning always "photoshopping" his head onto my body.

Female Athlete of the Month: June 2015

Name:  Julie Bullion

Age:  21

Hometown:  Mascoutah, IL

Occupation:  Senior at SIUE

How long have you been a member at 1020? 3 months!

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty. My first day was really exciting, despite getting lost 3 times on the way, I was excited to finally giving CrossFit a try. I was always athletic in high school (soccer, volleyball, basketball, and track) and I struggled my first 3 years of college to find a workout program that I could stick to. I fell in love with the intensity and competitiveness on the first day!

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining? I've lost weight! I don't know how much because I don't care about the number. And have also gained some noticeable muscle! I've never had much upper body strength and I'm noticing more and more since joining at 1020!

What are you individual goals? I want to break 200 lbs for my 1 rep max in back squat (currently sitting at 185), break 250 on my 1 rep max deadlift (currently at 210) and getting pull ups and push ups without bands! Which I'm super close to:)

Favorite moment at 1020 so far? Any and every PR!

What do you enjoy most about the coaching staff at 1020? They push me harder than I push myself! They're extremely motivating and always push me to do my best!

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started? Do it! And don't compare yourself  to the other athletes when you first start- learn proper form, learn the movements, get used to the environment and progress will happen!

Tell us something we don't know about you? I'm a certified SCUBA diver.

Favorite WOD? Anything with box jumps! :)

Least Favorite WOD? Anything with thrusters

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty.  I have visited a lot of Crossfits.  When there is not enough space and the class is overcrowded it really takes away from the experience.  My first thought upon walking into 1020 was "This place is huge and the class size is small, sign me up".

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining?  Strength gains, especially overhead squat.  Gained the ability to endure working out in 100% humidity.

What are you individual goals?  To win the masters division when I am 70.  To become a total beast.

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  Everyday at 6:00 a.m.

What do you enjoy most about the coaching staff at 1020?  The focus on proper technique and the fun personalities.

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started?  The toughest skill to acquire in Crossfit is the management of your ego.  The competitive group atmosphere aspect ofCrossfit is really why Crossfit gets people in such great condition.  Don't get caught up in what people around you are doing during a workout.  Don't get hung up on where you finished that day on the whiteboard.  Focus on proper technique and scale accordingly.  Humility is an attractive personality trait.

Tell us something we don't know about you?  When i was 19 I lived in a Tipi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tipi) in northern Idaho for a year.

Female Athlete of the Month: May 2015

Name:  Alaina Dennis

Age:  23 (but I'll be 24 next week!)

Hometown:  Warsaw, IL

Occupation:  Nurse

How long have you been a member at 1020?  2.5 months

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty.  I had followed Ten Twenty on Facebook for a while and finally go the guts to call about joining.  I was really nervous but excited when I walked in.  I had a feeling this was going to be a place I loved and was challenged by every time I came through the doors.

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining?  I feel a lot stronger and more healthy!  I am more mobile in certain lifts and my body seems to have more stamina in workouts.

What are your individual goals?  I'd love to fit into a size 8 again!  I have many goals for nutrition, in hopes that this and CrossFit 3-4 times a week will assist me to reach my size goal.  I can't wait for the day that I can RX a workout, but I know it will come in due time.  I want to improve my pull-ups and push-ups (strip those resistance bands away!) and work on kipping.

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  It's hard to pin a moment because I truly enjoy the community at 1020 every day and pushing each other in every WOD.  Getting Female Athlete of the Month is really exciting for me.  It's awesome that others think you are improving and moving upward in your fitness journey!

What do you enjoy most about the coaching staff at 1020?  They are really supportive, fun, friendly and don't let you cheat yourself.  I know that they push us to improve because they believe in us.  There's a quote at 1020 that goes something like "you don't stop when you feel like it, you stop when you're done."  And I think that's exactly what the staff expects of us here.  And they don't just say it, they are right beside you, helping you to the end.

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started?  Just get started!  There's always a reason to wait but I promise it is worth it.

Tell us something we don't know about you?  I think I've told some of ya, but I'm going to Europe in July for 2 weeks!  I'm so excited and can't wait to find a box in one of my destinations to drop by!

Favorite WOD?  Something with a combo of squats and box jumps.

Least Favorite WOD?  OVERHEAD SQUATS.  Mobility, mobility, mobility.

Name:  Tyler Goodman

Age:  24

Hometown:  Bethalto, IL

Occupation:  Project Engineer for Contegra Construction

How long have you been a member at 1020?  5 months

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty.  I really had no idea what CrossFit even was so I was a little nervous of course.  Everyone's so motivated and easy going though, and I started having a blast right away.

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining?  I just plain feel better since joining.  It's given me more energy and motivation in all other aspects of life.  I've always had trouble sticking with a workout routine, so it can be difficult to see results and reach goals.  That's not been the case with 1020.  I feel like I have accomplishments every time I come in, whether it be just completing a WOD after a rough workday, or a huge PR, I seem to walk out knowing I'm better off than when I walked in.

What are your individual goals?  My goal is really just to keep showing up every day.  Everyone works so hard at 1020, it's almost impossible not to do the same.  So I feel that if I stick with it, any goals I may have will fall into place.

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  Probably when I landed on my head trying to do handstand push-ups.  I'm sure it was other peoples favorite moment too!

What do you enjoy most about the coaching staff at 1020?  They seem to become friends with everyone that walks in the door and they have a genuine passion for trying to make everyone achieve their goals.  Good people all around!

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started?  Don't think twice, just come!  Working out and having fun at the same time?  Two birds with one stone.

Tell us something we don't know about you?  I am obsessed with hunting.  That's about the only thing I'll miss a WOD for this fall.

Favorite WOD?  Murph was a blast, but I'm glad it's only once a year.

Least Favorite WOD?  Was 15.5 the one with all the thrusters?  Ya, that one.

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at Ten Twenty?  You are freaking kidding me right...You actually want me to do that?!?  Haha.

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining?  I have definitely toned up and now dropping weight!  Also, the confidence I have found in myself again is amazing.  The friendships at 1020 is something I cherish...The laughs, the smiles and the jokes are what make the place so special.  To me you can go anywhere and workout but to have the support system and friendships is what makes 1020 like no other.

What are your individual goals?  Lose 20-30 more pounds and to one day compete.

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  I have to say anytime I there or out with the group is definitely one of my favorite moments.

What do you enjoy most about the coaching staff at 1020?  The energy, excitement, leadership, knowledge, and the motivation they all give to keep you moving forward.

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started?  Coming to join 1020 would be one of the best decisions you could make.  There is no other place like it and it will begin to be one of your favorite places to be.  You can do anything you put your mind to.  Also you can be a lifting and lip gloss kind of girl...cause I am :)

Tell us something we don't know about you?  I am not sure there is anything because it seems I am always talking about something.  Haha.

Least Favorite WOD?  Anything that involves running...So can I just row???  Hahahaha.

Male Athlete of the Month: April 2015

Name:  Andrew Csepp

Age:  24

Hometown:  Decatur, Illinois

Occupation:  Work at Nestle Purina

How long have you been a member at 1020?  About a month and a half.

Tell us about your first days walking through the doors at Ten Twenty?  The first day I walked through the door I was really excited because I felt at home almost immediately.  I felt like I was finally at the place where I needed to be to reach my goals.

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining?  I feel like I've learned more about using proper technique and also better form with all the Olympic lifts.

What are your individual goals?  I really want to get stronger and strive for that 400lb squat and 300lb bench.  Fran is one of my favorite/hated workouts.  She's short and sweet but can kill you every time.  I really want a sub 3 minute time.

Favorite Moment at 1020 so far?  There are a lot of times at 1020 I've enjoyed so far.  I think the best are still to come but basically showing up early every day and getting that WOD done and over before anything else.

What do you enjoy about the coaching staff at 1020?  I cannot say enough about the coaching staff.  I haven't had a coach yet in any type of fitness sport showing me how to do Olympic lifts and that.  I'm really happy to finally have some people that can give me that one on one attention and I think the coaches here are the best for me.

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started?  Words of advice:  Take it slow.  Focus on form and technique.  The rest will come with time.

Tell us something we don't know about you?  I'm a huge Rocky fan.  I boxed for a little before my time at 1020.  I would say it was my favorite sport until I started doing CrossFit.

Favorite WOD?  Fran is my favorite.  I also like anything with tire flips and something you wouldn't see in a typical gym.

Least Favorite WOD?  I don't know if I have a least favorite WOD, but I remember doing "the seven" and telling myself I'm never doing that again.

Athlete of the Month: March 2015

Name:  Josh Konkel

Age:  21

Hometown:  Millstadt, IL

Occupation:  Currently unemployed.  Full-time student at SIUE as a CMIS major.

How long have you been a member at 1020?  I have been a member at 1020 for a little over 2 months.  I started towards the end of January.

Tell us about your first day walking through the doors at 1020?  I had no idea what I was getting into, but I jumped in with both feet forward.  After my first trail day, I instantly knew I would love it and I signed the contract that night.  One of my best choices.

What benefits/accomplishments have you seen/had since joining?  I've definitely seen improvements in my conditioning and have lost weight in only 2 months.  Biggest accomplishment is easily the athlete of the month though because I didn't see that happening.  It helps me go back everyday knowing that the coaching staff sees my improvements.  I have made progress on some of the lifts and gymnastics work that I never knew I could do when I first walked in.

What are your individual goals?  Just to keep at it and get better and better everyday.  I feel that I take too many breaks in between lifts and I want to improve on that.  Again with the gymnastics portion of the sport.  I know I am getting better but definitely am not where I want to be.  Yet.

Favorite moment at 1020 so far?  I believe it was in the first week I was there, there was a WOD with box jump overs in it.  I was doing fine all the way through on them and of course being new I was one of the last people done with it.  On the last rep of the last set, I mentally thought I was done so I didn't give the last jump enough and clipped my toe on the box and went down while everyone was there cheering me on.  I will never live it down even though I laughed when it happened and still do now.  It might not be my favorite, but easily the most memorable so far.

What do you enjoy most about the coaching staff at 1020?  They 100% know what they are talking about and are very encouraging.  They want to see everyone excel and improve.  They spend equal time on everyone too.  If it wasn't for the coaching staff, I know I wouldn't be where I am today.  They are also a great time to be around while they aren't yelling at you to keep going during a WOD.

Words of advice for someone interested in getting started at 1020?  Don't be scared and discouraged if you aren't on top of the board or if you can't do something perfect the first time you attempt it.  No one expects you to get it the first day.  We have all been there and know how it feels.  I will be the first to tell you I can't do a lot of the motions.  That is what we are all there for though.

Tell us something we don't know about you?  I am a huge basketball fan.  I used to play all the way through high school and still play now.  But I am switching into coaching and I have been coaching grade school basketball for about 3 years now.  It can be frustrating at times and a lot of work but it is always worth it.

Favorite WOD?  I wouldn't say my favorite but the CrossFit games open 15.5 had to be the most rewarding for me.  I know I didn't get the best time and I know I probably could have done better, but I was fighting myself before if I wanted to the scaled one or not.  I ended up not doing the scale and I was proud of myself for that.

Least favorite WOD?  Plain and simple.  Anything with running.  I am not much of a runner so anything with multiple rounds of 400m runs will be brutal for me.
